Career Profiles: Linguistics
Linguistics is the science of language. Linguistics is the study of the origin, components, structure and relationship within language in order to understand how it functions in a system, both in the mind and in social context of those who speak it. Because of the nature and role of language throughout the history of humanity, linguistics has remained a dynamic and vital science. Students in linguistics acquire a strong aptitude for working with words and sounds. Students develop the ability to be creative in problem solving, the ability to analyze and decipher written materials, along with developing strong written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to analyze language in its social and cultural context. In recent decades, new applications of linguistics have emerged in education, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and computer science. Students may obtain a baccalaureate minor or a master of arts in linguistics. Although not required for the minor, foreign language courses are recommended. A master's degree is frequently needed as the basic requirement for entry into a professional position in this field.
