Career Profiles: Nutrition and Dietetics
Nutrition and Dietetics prepares students through specialized training in the science of nutrition to work as a professional member of a healthcare team. In their work, they may concentrate on research, management, teaching, counseling, or applying the principles of nutrition to maintain and improve the health of individuals and groups and to prevent nutrition-related diseases. Examples of the types of work performed by dietitians include: planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating food service systems; advising individuals on the selection and preparation of food; conducting research to determine the nutritional value of foods; providing medical nutrition therapy to maintain the well-being of healthy people or aid those who are ill; and educating students, members of the health profession, individuals, families and the general public on the principles of nutrition. The duties depend in part on the type and size of the organization.
