Cinematic Arts Lecturer, Annette Hayward-Carter has been invited by the Austin Film Society for a , FOXFIRE followed by a post-film discussion on the history of the production and her career on October 11, 2024. FOXFIRE is screening as part of To the Front, a deep-dive into the evolution of women’s stories, on-screen and behind the camera, kicking off with a trio of films as defiant as their filmmakers. FOXFIRE will be presented in partnership with  purveyors of the “coolest movie night in Austin” (Austin Statesman) and local hub for both young filmmakers and budding cinephiles alike. 

FOXFIRE (1996) is based on the controversial novel from Joyce Carol Oates, four teenage girls form a girl gang to combat sexual harassment from their teachers and fellow students. But when the group finds themselves in the crosshairs of the local jocks, they’ll find that rebellion comes at a cost. A provocative evocation of girlhood featuring breakthrough performances from Angelina Jolie, Jenny Shimizu, and Hedy Burress. The film is shot in 35mm.
