The Master of Arts in Education, Mathematics Education program is designed for educators who want to enhance their teaching ability in mathematics in culturally responsive and sustainable ways. Through innovative and collaborative activities, the program empowers educators to create a math classroom that sparks curiosity and fosters understanding and fluency in mathematics learning by relying on most current culturally relevant research and practices. Specifically, candidates learn to assess students’ diverse learning needs, provide targeted support to struggling learners in achieving mathematics proficiency, integrate technology into mathematics instruction, and develop engaging mathematics curriculum for a wide range of K-8 learners.
Two pathways are available to meet individual needs:
- Pathway 1 is a fully online program designed for classroom teachers who completed an accredited post-baccalaureate credential program. These students complete 6 core classes and would potentially use 12 post-baccalaureate semester units to reach the 30 unit minimum required for the degree. Students may finish the program in three semesters.
- Pathway 2 is designed for non-credentialed teachers who work in a private school or internationally and do not have a teaching credential. These students also complete 6 fully online core classes as well as an additional 4 classes (12 units) that support their educational interests to reach the 30 unit minimum required for the degree. Students may finish the program in three or four semesters and classes are offered in a combination of online, hybrid and in-person. This is not a pathway to "clear" a credential.
This program also has the flexibility to include 12 units of the Mathematics Instructional Specialist (MIS) Certificate courses taken through the College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPaCE).
Mathematics Education program provides candidates with the fundamental knowledge and skills of mathematics teaching and prepares socially responsible mathematics teacher leaders for a rapidly changing and technologically rich world. It engages candidates in research, scholarly activity, and ongoing evaluation. Finally, it helps candidates understand the value of diversity as related to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and prepares them for a diverse world in which they will serve and collaborate with educators and their communities.
Students will be able to:
- Describe contemporary issues in mathematics education
- Design various assessments, and interpret and use assessment results for planning and teaching mathematics
- Apply research-based instructional strategies in teaching
- Integrate contemporary technologies in mathematics planning, teaching, and assessment
- Integrate pre-algebra and algebra content and pedagogy in classrooms
- Design action research in their own teaching settings relating to mathematics education
The program prepares graduates who seek to enhance their knowledge and skills in mathematics content and pedagogy for leadership roles in mathematics education. The focus on pursuing in-depth study of effective mathematics instruction will help our graduates develop expertise as mathematics teacher-leaders.
