Council of Department Chairs

Present: C. Bennett, K. Slowinski, B. Taylor, B. Benken, H. Wu, M. Karteron, M. Horton, B. Livingston, C. Brazier, R. Behl, T. Gao, A. Bill, L. Martin-Hansen, and L. Olsen-Cooper.

Agenda: Approved.

  1. Minutes: Meeting minutes for Tuesday, 10/03/2017, were approved with amendments.
  2. Announcements
    1. There will be no CDC Meeting on Tuesday, October 24, 2017.
    2. CNSM Student Council is still recruiting for the Nobel Laureate for Spring 2018.
    3. Friday, December 8 is the date set for the Holiday Party, location TBD.
  3. Updates from Chairs
    1. Dr. Stan Finney will be giving a presentation titled "Flysch – Whisper of the Rocks" on Wednesday, October 11th at 5:00pm in PH1 Room 141. Everyone is invited.
    2. Two Geology students have received awards: Patrick O'Connell (Advisor: Matt Becker); Outstanding Student Presentation at the annual meeting of the Groundwater Resources Association of California in Sacramento and Leo Giannetta (Advisor: Rick Behl); First Place, Masters-level presentation, Pacific Section, American Association of Petroleum Geologists West Coast Student Expo at CSU Northridge.
    3. There will be a Chemistry Breakfast on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 8:00am – 10:30am in the Chartroom (invitations will go out soon).
    4. Science Education is working on updating the Single-Subject Credential Programs. The college asks that other departments provide .them information as necessary.
  4. Associate Dean Reports
    1. Dr. Barbara Taylor (Research)
      1. CNSM RS Funds Task Force: The CDC decided to create a CNSM RS funds task force.
        1. Brian Livingston moved and Chris Brazier seconded adopting the charge below for the task force.
        2. Brian Livingston moved and Chris Brazier seconded the Task Force Membership proposal below, which was approved unanimously.
        3. Task Force Membership: For the sake of transparency and thoroughness, we call for participation by all CNSM Departments, which can be fulfilled by Chairs or other faculty. The Task Force will be chaired by Associate Dean Barbara Taylor. Membership will consist of 1 member nominated by each department, and 2 at large members selected by the dean's office with approval from the CDC. Administrative Service Manager Henry Wu will serve as an ex-officio member of the Task Force.
    2. Dr. Kris Slowinski (Instruction)
      1. EO1100 changes for majors.
        1. EO1100 mandates a change in upper division GE requirements. The order requires upper division GE to consist of 3 units from each of the B, C, and D categories. Departments will need to certify their upper division capstone GE courses in those categories for them to still count for GE credit. Some programs may need to change major requirements to remain under the 120 credit hour cap on programs.
        2. Departments are encouraged to create upper division GE courses for non CNSM majors that can count in the B category.
  5. Richard D. Green Endowed Graduate Fellowship Program
    1. The following motion was moved by Rick Behl, seconded by Andreas Bill and approved unanimously:
      1. The Richard D. Green Graduate Fellowship will be split in two and awarded to the two highest rank non-funded Graduate Research Fellow applicants.
  6. Faculty Senate Update – Chris Brazier
    1. NCUR 2021- (). ºÚÁÏÍø will submit proposal to host in 2021 (about 4,000 students from all disciplines) during Spring Break 2021 (would include awards for posters and presentations). The proposal is joint with other Los Angeles area campuses. Should the proposal be accepted, then faculty at the hosting institutions will be asked to review student abstract submissions.
    2. Jody Cormack led discussions on the Executive Orders (General Education).
    3. The TA/GA Employment Policy is being revised to comply with the Unit 11 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
