Degree Requirements Contact Information CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LONG BEACH DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY Dear Prospective Graduate Student, Thank you for your interest in the M.S. in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology in the Kinesiology department at California State University, Long Beach. Our graduate programs recruit focused, highly motivated, and high achieving post-graduate students who seek a traditional college experience, while maintaining its mission of providing access and opportunity for non-traditional students, including first generation, reentering part-time, and historically under-represented groups. Beginning fall 2023, our degree names changed, but the primary focus of our programs remained the same. We now are offer an M.S. in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology degree with three options: Sport Psychology, Exercise Psychology, or Coaching. The Sport Psychology option includes coursework for students who wish to become applied consultants working in performance enhancement in sport or other performance domains, as well as those who plan to continue on in PsyD or PhD programs. The Exercise Psychology option provides coursework and research opportunities for students who plan to go on to PhD programs or work in wellness or public health. The Coaching option is intended for coaches working in secondary or post-secondary educational, community, or club settings. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LONG BEACH DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY Department of Kinesiology Admissions Checklist Documents submitted through Cal State Apply ( HYPERLINK "http://www.csulb.edu/apply" http:www.csulb.edu/apply). Graduate Application Statement of Purpose ______Supplemental materials (Diversity statement) 3 names and emails of people who will be emailed to upload a recommendation letter on your behalf. Resume Optional, unofficial transcripts from any institution you attended. This is not required. Documents submitted directly to the university: Official transcripts from the undergraduate institution where you have completed or are currently completing your undergraduate degree. They can be either sent electronically to HYPERLINK "mailto:es-idptrans@csulb.edu" es-idptrans@csulb.edu or mailed to: Office of Enrollment Services California State University 1250 Bellflower Boulevard Long Beach, CA 90840 I recommend submitting transcripts electronically directly to Enrollment Services using the email above. Sending transcripts by mail will result in slower processing times. If transcripts are emailed to the Kinesiology department, or sent to Dr. Fogaca, they will not be received by Enrollment Services. Please be sure to mail official transcripts only to the email or mailing address above in order for your application to be complete. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LONG BEACH DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY Statement of Purpose When reviewing applications, faculty in the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology program use the statement of purpose to learn more about each applicant and their fit for the graduate program. This is an opportunity for students to discuss their career goals, their preparation for graduate school (academic and otherwise), and their reasons for attending the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology program specifically. A statement of purpose should be 1-2 pages in length and address the following in an essay format: The reason(s) for choosing the M.S. in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology at this university specifically, and your reason(s) for choosing your specific option: Sport Psychology, Exercise Psychology, or Coaching. Your educational goal(s), (e.g., M.S. as a terminal degree or go on to a Ph.D. as a terminal degree). Your career goal(s), (e.g., applied sport psychology consultant, professor, researcher, director of wellness program, coach, athletic director). a) Please be clear about your career goals, how they relate to the option that you chose, and how the program can help you achieve them. Any special training, course work, or practical experience you have related to your goals and area of interest. This can include sport experience as an athlete or coach, volunteer experience, research experience, or any other experience related to the field. a) Coaching option: Please include any relevant coursework that may help you succeed in exercise science graduate courses (e.g., exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning) Diversity Statement Please write a separate statement with 400-600 words explaining your interest and/or background in social justice, anti-racism, or diversity, equity, and inclusion. Include how this interest or background will inform your applied work and/or research in sport, exercise, and performance psychology in your chosen option and in your future career. Prerequisite Degrees and Courses None of the three options of the program has degree or courses as prerequisites for admission. However, we do have some recommendations: Coaching option: We recommend an undergraduate major or minor in Kinesiology or related field. The coaching option includes challenging electives that would be difficult to pass without taking undergraduate level courses in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and motor learning. We also accept students who have taken these courses without having a major or minor in this field. Sport psychology option: We recommend that you take an upper-level undergraduate course in Abnormal Psychology if you are interested in pursuing the CMPC. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to take it at , as it is not part of the programs curriculum. Note on GPA: Although we do not set a minimum GPA higher than the minimum required by the university, the average GPA of accepted students is well over 3.0. We will consider students holistically, however, so we suggest that applicants with GPA lower than 3.0 directly address in their statements what makes them capable of succeeding in graduate coursework and seek strong faculty recommendation letters regarding their potential to succeed. Frequently Asked Questions General Information About the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Program What type of student does the program look for? Students who excel in this program can write well, are critical thinkers, and are highly motivated. These applicants have clear research and/or applied goals and have worked to familiarize themselves with the field. What does it mean to be in a cohort? Students start the program in fall semesters only and take all required courses together as a unit. Elective courses can vary from semester to semester; but each option is intended for students to complete coursework together. How many students are in a cohort? Each year varies, but we aim to have between 18 and 25 students each year between the three options. What is the recommended workload? Nine units of graduate coursework per semester is a normal academic load for a full-time graduate student. If you intend to complete the degree part-time, the faculty can help advise you with the course of study. What times are classes normally offered? The majority of the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology graduate courses are in the mornings, from 8-10:45; however, some classes are also held from 11-1:45 or 1-3:45. Some elective courses may be offered in the evening or other times, more often for the Coaching elective coursework. Most courses are held one day a week on campus. Do I have to live in Long Beach to complete my degree? This degree is intended to be completed in person, and the courses/course schedules are not set up to accommodate distance education. Courses are held in person on the campus. What are my opportunities on campus to be involved in the field? Students in the sport psychology option have the opportunity to earn AASP CMPC hours doing consulting work with athletes and teams, outside of coursework. First year graduate students shadow second year students. Students interested in exercise psychology should work with Dr. Ede to locate opportunities within LifeFit and the community. We do not guarantee CMPC hours for students. Can I consult with athletes on my own? This is not recommended. Student consultants require supervision that is provided by faculty. If you choose to consult on your own, you may not affiliate yourself with when you do so. If you wish to engage in applied work in a new placement through our faculty supervision, you must first ask permission from your supervisor. What conferences should I attend? There are two major conferences within the field. In the fall, the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) hosts their annual conference. This is a largely applied conference and is good for networking and learning practical skills. There is large student membership within this organization. In early summer, the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) hosts their annual conference. This is a smaller conference, but excellent for research and meeting top researchers. How do I get involved in research? Speak with your professors! There are often opportunities to help with research, and you are encouraged to consider independent research for your thesis. Please note that we dont take students into labs but offer research opportunities throughout the program. How do I know if I should write a thesis or complete the culminating project? If you wish to pursue a doctoral degree, you should write a thesis. If you write a thesis, you should have your idea solidified by the end of your second semester. Your advising professor can help you with this. Plan to write a lot over the winter and spring and propose the thesis before your second year. All data is the property of , and you should plan to not only complete the thesis, but to submit the data for presentation and publication. Students who have more of an applied focus generally complete the capstone project. Who are the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology Program Faculty Members? There are currently three main faculty members. Dr. Leilani Madrigal has research interests in mental toughness, and sport injury. Dr. Jana Fogaca researches effectiveness of supervision of student applied work with athletes, and also focuses on mental health. Dr. Alison Ede specializes in exercise psychology; her research interests include social networks, and body image. Drs. Madrigal and Fogaca are AASP certified (CMPC) consultants who will be supervising students for CMPC hours. What resources are available on campus? The Sport Psychology Lab is located in room Kin 51. There are computers available for students to use. Also, if students need to meet with athletes, the conference room can be reserved. The lab is stocked with books and materials for games that can be rented out. The graduate assistant will have lab hours posted on the outside of the lab. How can I find you on social media? We have Facebook (Sport and Exercise Psychology at the Beach @LBSU.SEP) and Instagram (@lbsusportpsychology) accounts. Accreditation The University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (985 Atlantic Avenue, Suite 100, Alameda, CA 94501, 510-748-9001), the agency responsible for granting regional accreditation to colleges and universities in California, Hawaii, and Guam. It is accredited by the California State Board of Education and is on the list of approved institutions of the American Association of University Women. Frequently Asked Questions Application Procedures and Eligibility What is the name of the program and where can it be found on Cal State Apply? You will need to make sure you select Fall 2025 for the application, and then search for Long Beach when you reach the application selection page. Our program is listed under Long Beach Graduate, not Long Beach Extension. The name of the program is Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology and you will see the three options: Sport Psychology, Exercise Psychology, or Coaching. Please make sure you choose the correct option! I do not have an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. Can I still apply, and do I need to complete any prerequisite courses? For the coaching option, we recommend that you have a major or minor in Kinesiology or similar degree. The coaching option includes challenging elective courses such as Advanced Strength and Conditioning and Biomechanics that would be difficult to succeed without having taken an undergraduate course in these areas. We do not make this degree recommendation mandatory because we can also accept coaching students who took exercise science courses in their undergraduate degree without having Kinesiology as a major or minor. For exercise psychology and sport psychology, you can apply with any undergraduate degree. You do not need to take any prerequisite coursework to be eligible. If your degree is in a field other than Kinesiology or Psychology, you can add information to your Statement of Purpose to explain how you feel you are prepared for the degree due to other experiences you have had (coaching, athletic participation, internships, research experience, etc.). When I select the program, it says alternate program required. Do I need to do this, and why? You are not required to choose an alternate program, despite the message on Cal State Apply. This option allows you to choose a second program at Long Beach State to apply to, but it is optional. If you choose to select an alternate program, your materials will be automatically sent to that second program for consideration if you are not selected to your desired option within the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology program. However, your materials cannot be modified to fit the second programs requirements. We recommend tailoring your materials to your first choice program. Can I apply to one of the other options within Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology as my alternate program? You can apply for Exercise Psychology or Coaching as an alternate program, but the Sport Psychology option will not be available as an alternate program. For example, if your primary option is Sport Psychology, you could choose either Exercise Psychology or Coaching as your alternate program. You would be considered for the alternate program if you are not admitted into your first choice option. What happens if I apply to a first-choice program outside of the Kinesiology department and choose one of the Exercise Psychology or Coaching options as my alternate program? For example, if you applied to a degree within a different department on campus, and you have chosen one option within the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology program as your second choice, and you are accepted by your first choice program, your application will not be reviewed for this program. Your application will only be sent to the Exercise Psychology or Coaching program for review if you are denied from your first choice program. If your application is sent to us for review as the second choice, we will contact you to update your materials. We are only automatically sent the materials from your initial application. However, we will email you and ask for a new statement of purpose to complete your application. What documents are required and how do I upload them? After you have selected the M.S. in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology and your desired option, you will upload your documents to the Program Materials section of the Cal State Apply website. After clicking on Program Materials, you will see tabs for Home, Documents, and Recommendations. Under Documents, the following materials need to be uploaded: Statement of purpose (see above for instructions on what to include) Diversity statement (see above for instructions) Resume or CV Under Recommendations, you will submit the following: Email addresses of 3 recommenders who will write letters addressing your past academic performance and preparation for graduate school. We are no longer requiring forms for recommendations, so if you have a form from a previous iteration of our website, you do not need to include it. We ask that at least 2 of your 3 letters come from faculty who can speak to your academic backgrounds. If you are not able to find letters from academic faculty, please reach out (CHHS-SEPP@csulb.edu) to discuss alternative options. How much does the school look at GPA, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation? All of these aspects of the application are important; however, the statement of purpose tells us the most about you and your goals, which can be very helpful in determining your fit for the program. Do I need to submit my transcripts? Official transcripts need to be sent electronically to Enrollment Services for the university where you completed your degree (or where you are currently completing your degree, if it is in progress). You do not need to submit an additional transcript to the Cal State Apply system. If you feel that other transcripts from community colleges will help us in our decision, and contain coursework related to psychology, research methods, sociology, social justice, etc., then we recommend uploading unofficial copies of transcripts directly to Cal State Apply. Please combine them into one document (PDF recommended) for the upload. If you are currently a student, you do not need to submit any transcripts, official or otherwise, to Cal State Apply or Enrollment Services. Your transcripts are already on file. Are GRE scores required? No, we do not require GRE scores for this program. How long does it take to hear back about my application? Once you have submitted your application on Cal State Apply, your recommenders have submitted their rec letters, and your official transcript has been received by Enrollment Services, then the university will process your application. After they have determined you meet the minimum criteria, they will release your application to the department for our review. In general, we will begin reviewing applications after the February 15th deadline and expect to make decisions starting in March, depending on the volume of applications.. How can I apply for an assistantship? A limited number of graduate teaching and research assistantships are available to qualified graduate students. If you are admitted to the program, you will be emailed information for TA and GA position opportunities. Who should I contact if I have questions about the application process? Please email the program (HYPERLINK "mailto:CHHS-SEPP@csulb.edu"CHHS-SEPP@csulb.edu) at any time with questions about the application process.
