Prospective DrPH Students

  • The letter of intent is one of the several documents that need to be submitted in order for the registration package to be considered complete.
  • Each applicant should submit a letter of intent to enroll in the Doctor of Public Health ( DrPH ) Degree Program at 黑料网 to the director of the DrPH program:

  • The letter should specify the following:
  1. Reason/(s) for selecting 黑料网 HSC's DrPH program.
  2. Whether you will enroll as a full time or part time student.
  3. The year of enrollment in the DrPH program.
  4. The selection of concentration.

Candidates seeking admission to the DrPH Program must meet 黑料网鈥檚 requirements, and the Department of Health Science鈥檚 requirement for admission.  More information on university admission requirements can be found here: 黑料网 Admissions

Applicant seeking admission to the DrPH program must have:

  • A graduate degree in public health from an accredited institution or equivalent (such as health service administration, environmental health, MBA with a health services focus) will be considered eligible to apply for the program; or the applicant has completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by the department e.g., graduate professional degree in health-related sciences such as MD, DO, DNP, DPT, DAUD, etc; or have completed equivalent academic preparation (6 MPH foundational core courses).
  • A Minimum graduate school GPA of 3.0 or above, in work completed in highest degree completed. 
  • A minimum of one year of field experience in the field of public health 

Documents to be submitted for DrPH application

  1. Official transcripts from all institutions (including community college and graduate coursework).
  2. TOEFL scores form all applicants whose native language is not English and who did not receive the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor鈥檚 or master鈥檚 degree at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction. Minimum TOEFL 90
  3. Completed CSU application

  6. Three recommendation (e.g., letters, interviews, rating sheets) which addresses the candidate鈥檚 suitability for doctoral level study and leadership abilities. 
  7.  Statement of purpose and personal history statement describing the applicant鈥檚 background and experiences, rationale for seeking degree and intentions for applying the newly obtained knowledge and skills to meet the needs of underserved populations. 
  8.  A personal interview; and either
    1. a statement from the applicant's employer, indicating support for the applicant's doctoral studies; or
    2. a statement from the applicant, describing the applicant's plan for meeting professional responsibilities and the demands of the program.

Admission by Special Action
An applicant who does not qualify for admission under the provisions of Article 2.1 may be admitted with conditionally classified graduate standing with the appropriate authorities' approval and recommendation. Students with deficiencies in prerequisite preparation or GPA may be rectified by specified additional preparation, including examinations and if the applicant is judged by the appropriate campus authority to possess sufficient academic and professional potential pertinent to public health leadership, may be admitted with conditionally classified graduate standing. The number of applicants admitted by special action shall not exceed fifteen percent of the applicants regularly admitted to the program in any one academic year.
 

Admission with Conditionally Classified Graduate Standing
Classified standing is normally granted when all prerequisites have been satisfactorily completed, the official study plan formulated, recommendation made by the appropriate Graduate Advisor to the Associate Vice President, and the Academic Programs Office gives final approval.

A student is not officially classified until an approved study plan is on file in Office of Graduate Studies. The student will be sent a copy of the approved study plan. Copies will be filed in the academic unit, university records, and Office of Graduate Studies.

Advanced Standing & Transfer Credit Policy

Students may apply for admission with advanced standing, based on previous graduate work and be allowed up to 30 units applied to the DrPH. Transfer courses must be graduate-level courses, from an accredited institution authorized to grant graduate degrees, appropriate content to equivalent course, and completed with a grade of B or better. Courses for transfer credit will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

At least 42 semester units shall be completed in residence at the campus or campuses awarding the degree. The appropriate campus authority may authorize the substitution of credit earned by alternate means for part of this residence requirement. The campus may establish a transfer policy allowing application to degree requirements of relevant coursework and credits completed as a matriculated student in another graduate program, on the condition that the other program is appropriately accredited.

Foreign Language

The DrPH will not have a foreign language requirement. However, students with language skills other than English are highly encouraged to apply, including those for whom English is a second language. Language skills such as Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Armenian, and other languages relevant to underserved populations in Southern California are highly desired.
 

Tuition and Fees

The cost per semester is $9,450

Cost for the entire DrPH Degree Program is $56,700

There is no difference in tuition between full time and part time enrollment in the DrPH degree program.

In addition, there are several scholarships and employment opportunities within the Health Science Department. These include:

  • Gaines Award: provides scholarships to women health science majors, undergraduate or graduate, who are of Native American heritage.
  • Marion Pollock Scholarship Award: provides scholarships to enrolled students who are advanced to candidacy for the Master of Science Degree in Health Education and are actively engaged in thesis development.

The Director of the DrPH program will hold monthly orientation session both in person and/or via zoom for prospective DrPH applicants.

Application and Admissions 

Please complete the application online via In addition to completing the online application form, you will upload all of your supplementary materials to the online application including the fillable PDF application form specific for the DrPH program. You should upload all supporting documents to the Cal State Apply system and submit them together as one package. This includes the Letter of Intent, CV, PDF of the DrPH application, and all supporting materials.  In future years, we will be using the SOPHAS centralized application system which is currently available if applicants prefer to use that system. 

All kinds of experience count toward this requirement including internships, volunteer work, full and part time work etc. You can combine multiple part-time or short term roles.   As long as the experience(s) was/were related to public health and adds up to 1 year of full-time experience (30+ hours per week), you meet this requirement. 

April 1st of every year for Fall admission. There is only 1 application cycle per year.

Yes, if you want to improve your chances of being accepted into the DrPH program.  Priority is given to those who have met all the admission criteria including the completion of all the pre-requisite courses or their equivalence. There is a conditional acceptance process for exceptional applicants who still need to meet the public health prerequisite course requirements.  The required courses are listed below and they can be taken at any accredited Master of Public Health program such as 黑料网, Cal State LA, CSUF, CSUN etc.  You may take the courses at 黑料网 under your conditional acceptance.  The 6 course topics are listed below and also include the 黑料网 MPH Courses that meet those requirements.

There are many different degree programs that can prepare you for a career in public health, so we welcome applicants with degrees other than an MPH (MS, MA, MD, MPP, MNP etc.).  However, you do need to demonstrate completion of the Foundational Competencies in Public Health through the completion of foundational MPH courses or their equivalence (see above).

Yes, you can earn up to 6 units of DrPH courses through credit for prior learning through standardized examination. Please contact the DrPH Program Director.

A GPA of 3.0 is a pre-requisite for admission into the DrPH program.  Occasionally, a conditional acceptance is offered to a student for missing a pre-requisite course.  However, the student is expected to complete the missing pre-requisite course during the first semester of enrollment with a minimum of a B grade in order for that student to continue in the program.

We admit 12 students for each concentration per calendar year (36 total max). The faculty for each concentration (PHIT, Global Health, Policy)  select the students for their concentration. 

A minimum TOEFL score of 90 score is required of all International applicants to the DrPH program, with the exception of those students who have successfully completed a minimum of at least one year of full-time graduate work at an accredited English-speaking College or university.   For visa related questions, please contact the Center for International Education  (CIE). 

After admission to the DrPH program, the university will issue you document that you can take it to the U.S. Embassy in your respective country to apply for an F or a J visa.  For more information, please contact the Center for International Education (CIE). 

Program and Curriculum 

The  DrPH degree program is a 48 semester units in total after the Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree program. 

Of the 48 units:

  • 25 units are foundational core courses
  • 6 units are electives courses
  • 9 units are concentration (specialization) courses
  • 8 units are pre-dissertation and dissertation courses

The three concentration areas are:

  • Public Health Informatics and Technology
  • Global Health
  • Public Policy and Management

No, the program is not completely online. It is offered in hybrid format.  Some of the courses are taught face to face/in-person, others are hybrid, some are online. Depending on enrollment, one section of each core course will be offered online. 

Classes are offered in the evening Monday through Thursday. Each core course is typically offered as in-person or online, and sections are from 4:00pm to 6:45pm and 7:00pm to 9:45pm to provide options for students in modality and timing. 

The duration of the program for full time students is 2 calendar years including summer (6 semesters), for part-time students it is three years, also including summers (9 semesters).  The courses are offered in sequential order, and it is cohort based program.  Not every course is offered every semester. Tuition is the same for part-time and full-time enrollment.

Yes, there are a limited number of research assistantships available.  They will be awarded through a competitive process.

Yes, during some semesters, there may be paid teaching assistantships for up to 20hrs per week.  These positions do not cover tuition.
