Career Profiles: Zoology

ºÚÁÏÍø Department of Zoology

Zoology is the study of animals, their origin, behavior and life processes. A zoologist studies all aspects of animal life from the functioning of a single organism through the functioning or behavior of a group of organisms. Many zoologists are interested in the biology of particular groups of animals (i.e. insects-entomologist, snakes- herpetologist, mammals-mammalogist). Zoologists must be able to conduct research, analyze data, have good written and oral communication skills and have a natural curiosity about living things. A bachelor's degree is usually the minimum requirement for entry into the field of zoology. Relevant on-the-job training is extremely helpful for any career. With graduates facing stiff competition, it is becoming increasingly important to seek an advanced degree or specialized training. For a four-year college or university teaching position, a Ph.D. is almost always a necessity; a master¹s degree is usually required for community college-level teaching.
